Whakaari Whakamaumahara - Whakaari Memorial 2022

In December 2020, at a pandemic impacted memorial event to mark the first anniversary of the Whakaari eruption, Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Awa Tumuaki Joe Harawira promised that the time would come when everyone who wanted to could gather at Tu Mānuka Tūtahi to remember.

With COVID-19 restrictions relaxed and international borders now fully open, this time has come, and tomorrow (Friday, 9 December) the community is invited to attend Whakaari Whakamaumahara – Whakaari Memorial 2022.

The event begins with pōhiri, and manuhiri (guests) are invited to gather outside Te Mānuka Tūtahi Marae, Muriwai Drive, Whakatāne ahead of the 12:30pm start time. The event will include speeches of remembrance and reflection inside Mataatua Whare.

"We are aware that some of our manuhiri could be those most directly affected by the events of 9 December 2019 and I again emphasise to them that we welcome them with open arms and open hearts," Mr Harawira says.

"We also respectfully welcome representatives of the many emergency services that were involved at the time and the many, many members of our community who have been touched by the incident and its aftermath."

"We will be setting the day up with karakia at dawn beside Te Hau Tutua Park and anyone who would like to is also invited to join us there at 5am."

Both gatherings are jointly delivered by Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Awa and Te Kaunihera o Whakatāne - Whakatāne District Council.
