A large tree has fallen on the Makapua Stream Bridge on SH38 north of Wairoa, resulting in a weeklong road closure. Although a detour is available, travel to and from Wairoa will still be affected by this road closure.

A detour is available via Waihi and Ruapapa roads, but this adds an extra hour to travel time to/from Wairoa. The road is unsealed and includes a bridge limited to 36 tonnes load.

NZTA intends to post signs at the Rotorua end of SH38 and in Murupara to inform drivers of the road closure and detour.

The unusually dry winter has forced the Whakatāne District Council to undertake sand-disking operations at the Whakatāne River bar, starting next week.

Disking will be undertaken at the peak of the outgoing tidal flow and aims to loosen the compacted sand between the “Narrows” at the river entrance and the river bar, about 50 metres offshore. The loose sand will be taken out to sea in the tidal current, to a point where a proportion of it will carried away by the west-east current along the coast.

The Whakatāne District Council is replacing its existing logo, as the first step in an organisational branding refresh.

The new logo was developed by Council’s in-house graphic designer, in consultation with staff and elected members. A number of concepts were presented through a series of focus groups, with the preferred option being adopted by the Council at its 31 July meeting.

With more than 1600 hours of sunshine as of 31 July, Whakatāne is well in the lead in 2013's sunshine race.

Data gathered from NIWA's Climate Database shows that Whakatāne has had 1630 hours of sunshine so far this year. A very sunny July lengthened our lead over New Plymouth by an additional 50 hours; New Plymouth has now had 98 fewer sunshine hours than Whakatāne this year. Other sunny contenders across New Zealand are even farther behind.

The results of the Whakatāne District Council’s latest annual residents’ survey have shown a solid improvement in the community’s perceptions of most Council services and activities.

The survey involved telephone interviews with 300 residents, randomly selected on a pro-rata basis across the District’s five wards. Its outcomes are used in the Council’s Annual Report and indicate which services and activities are meeting or exceeding the community’s expectations and those where improvement is required.

The Royal New Zealand Air Force’s 40 Squadron will be flying into Whakatāne on Tuesday and Wednesday this week to carry out tactical training exercises at Whakatāne Airport.

Whakatāne District Council Manager Business Services, Aaron Milne, says the RNZAF exercise will involve several night-time landings and take-offs at the airfield, over both nights, with the squadron’s C-130 Hercules aircraft.

Whakatāne District Council and Ecocast Limited are offering the opportunity for interested community members to take part in a site visit to Ecocast’s Kawerau-based composting facility, which currently processes the Whakatāne District’s greenwaste.

The site visit, which will take place from 9 am to 12 pm on Friday, 2 August 2013, is part of the Council’s pre-consultation with the community with regard to its proposal to establish a new greenwaste processing facility at Keepa Road. If that proposal does proceed, it would involve a full resource consent and consultation process.

This year’s World Breastfeeding Week will see mothers across New Zealand attempting to break the record set last year of 1571 women breastfeeding simultaneously.

Locations are being set up across New Zealand for mothers and babies to come together and celebrate breastfeeding.

Pacific Curls will be performing several sessions, starting at 10 am in the Sheaff Family Gallery, to celebrate the culmination of Te Wiki o te Reo Māori and Matariki events.

A major upgrading of Edgecumbe’s wastewater reticulation system is expected to be completed by the end of this month.

The $1.2 million upgrade will significantly lift sewerage pumping and piping capacity in the western sectors of the town and should bring an end to longstanding sewer overflow issues.

The Whakatāne District Council has entered into a conditional agreement to sell a 3.1-hectare block of Harbour Fund-owned land at Port Ōhope.

Completion of the agreement is conditional on a due diligence process, and if all goes according to plan, the sale will be finalised in January 2014.

The Eastern Bay of Plenty Joint Committee held its first meeting on Monday, 8 July 2013 and signed a Memorandum of Understanding outlining the purpose and principles of the group.
