Whakatāne Town Wharf

Whakatāne Town Wharf Remediation Project

The construction of the Whakatāne Town Wharf began more than 100 years ago in 1919. It was extended in 1936 and 1940 and has become a much loved town feature. In order to ensure the wharf is strong and safe for many years to come it requires maintenance and strengthening. This will include replacing and strengthening piles and concrete structures underneath the wharf.

Our contractors will be using a technique called hydroblasting (high-pressure waterblasting) to prepare the wharf for the new concrete. This can be very noisy, but noise is monitored to stay within consented limits. They will also install special equipment to trap dust and debris and to minimise noise if necessary. Safety is paramount for this project, as is protecting and enhancing the environment.

We’ll be setting up a worksite in this location, but most of the work happens underneath the wharf structures. We'll try to make the top of the wharf as uncluttered as possible, but at times you may have to walk or ride safely through the carpark.
