The school holiday fun continues at Te Kōputu a te whanga a Toi – Whakatāne Library and Exhibition Centre – next Wednesday 24 July, with musical duo Pacific Curls putting on an exciting and interactive performance for children of all ages to enjoy.

Pacific Curls will be performing several sessions, starting at 10 am in the Sheaff Family Gallery, to celebrate the culmination of Te Wiki o te Reo Māori and Matariki events.

A major upgrading of Edgecumbe’s wastewater reticulation system is expected to be completed by the end of this month.

The $1.2 million upgrade will significantly lift sewerage pumping and piping capacity in the western sectors of the town and should bring an end to longstanding sewer overflow issues.

The Whakatāne District Council has entered into a conditional agreement to sell a 3.1-hectare block of Harbour Fund-owned land at Port Ōhope.

Completion of the agreement is conditional on a due diligence process, and if all goes according to plan, the sale will be finalised in January 2014.

The Eastern Bay of Plenty Joint Committee held its first meeting on Monday, 8 July 2013 and signed a Memorandum of Understanding outlining the purpose and principles of the group.

At the inaugural meeting on Monday, the Eastern Bay of Plenty was well-represented around the table with Mayors and Councillors from Ōpōtiki, Kawerau and Whakatāne District Councils and the Chairman and a local Councillor from the Bay of Plenty Regional Council.

Te Kōputu a te whanga a Toi is delighted to have Pacific Curls with us on Wednesday, 24th July. They will be presenting an exciting and interactive experience for children aged 5–12 years old. Several performances are planned to take place throughout the day, each lasting for about 30 minutes. The sessions are filled with music, dance and stories.

  • $5 swim and slide (slide open 10:30 am - 5:30 pm)
  • A large inflatable playground (open daily between 11 am and 2 pm)

There are also holiday intensive swimming lessons available through the Whakatāne Swim School.

Plans for a multi-million dollar, integrated coastal residential, retirement and marine precinct development in Whakatāne will take shape over the next six months, following the signing of a heads of agreement between the Whakatāne District Council and developers.

The agreement signals a commitment to investigate a ‘masterplan’ approach utilising the Council’s large Piripai and adjoining Bennett’s Block landholdings for a major new lifestyle development. Signatories to the agreement are the Council (WDC), Hopper Developments Limited (HDL) and Whakatāne Marina Limited (WML).

The Eastern Bay of Plenty’s three territorial authorities – the Ōpōtiki, Kawerau and Whakatāne District Councils – and the Bay of Plenty Regional Council have formed a Joint Committee to explore and take advantage of collaboration opportunities.

The Joint Committee will be made up of two elected members appointed by each Council and will hold its inaugural meeting in the Whakatāne District Council chambers on Monday 8 July. Members’ first job will be to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) setting out the purpose and principles of the committee.

Contractors are nearing completion on needed work to the Nga Tapuwae o Toi track. However, poor weather and other site complications have delayed completion of work on the site.

The originally intended completion date for work on the track was approximately 30 June. With the weather-induced delays, main structural completion is expected by the end of next week, with site tidy-ups to follow the next week.

At this time, contractors estimate the track work should be fully completed by mid-July. Signs on the track will be updated accordingly today.

Whakatāne District Council will be carrying out planned works for the Plains Water Supply on Tuesday, 2 July 2013. The works are scheduled to be completed between 7 pm Tuesday, 2 July and 2 am Wednesday, 3 July.

Council expects that the works will cause an intermittent supply of water for this period and possibly low pressure in some areas within the Rangitāiki Plains. The Council apologises for any inconvenience these works may cause and thanks residents for their cooperation.

On 10 April 2013, Bay of Plenty Regional Council, as both an applicant and a consenting authority, and the Whakatāne District Council as a joint consenting authority, sought submissions on the Kopeopeo Canal Remediation Project. Submissions closed on 17 May 2013.

The Whakatāne District Council has appointed Inka Krawczyk, an engineer with more than 20 years of international experience in major infrastructure projects, to manage the development, construction and start-up of the Matatā Sewerage Scheme.

The selection panel which assessed the short-listed candidates included the Chief Executive of the Bay of Plenty Regional Council, Mary-Anne MacLeod and the chairperson of the Whakatāne District Council’s Matatā Projects Governance Group, Councillor Russell Orr.

Minor traffic delays are expected across the Bay of Plenty next week as a result of inspection work on highway bridges. NZTA will be carrying out inspections on selected bridges until Friday, 28 June.

Bridges will be inspected in the following order, starting from Monday, 24 June:

  • SH30 Rangitaiki River Bridge
  • SH2 Waiotahi Bridge
  • SH2 Waioeka Opotiki Bridge

NZTA will put in place temporary speed limits during the inspections, and manual stop/go traffic management will be used to direct vehicles around inspection areas.

Applications are being called for annual grant funding to groups providing a social service to the residents of the Whakatāne District. Preference will be given to groups with a voluntary component. There is a balance of $20,000 to allocate.

Application forms can be obtained from any Council Office, or you may access application forms on the District Council's website. Multi-year funding can be sought for the next two years, in line with the Council’s Long Term Plan.

The forthcoming sale by tender of two abandoned Murupara properties presents an opportunity for real estate investors. The properties have been declared abandoned by the Rotorua High Court and have therefore been cleared of all rates arrears.

Whakatāne District Council has opened a tender process for the sale of the two neighbouring residential properties with disused homes on 713 m² and 718 m² sites.
