The Whakatāne District Council has issued a reminder to people who live in close proximity to escarpments of the need to take a precautionary approach to landslide risks.

Council Strategy and Planning General Manager David Bewley says the death of a Marahau woman as the result of a landslide in the Tasman District last weekend is a tragic reminder of the threat landslides represent.

MetService has issued a special weather advisory for most of New Zealand for later this week. A significant cold outbreak is expected to reach our area from late Thursday through early Friday.

"Strong south to southwest winds spread over the North Island during Thursday
and Friday," Metservice says, "with gusty conditions also about the Bay of Plenty."

Cold rain is expected on eastern parts of the North Island, with snow expected in the central plateau of the North Island.

Local elections are just around the corner.

To have your say in the local elections, you must be enrolled to vote by 16 August. Otherwise, you won't receive your voting papers in the mail. (Note that the date may be pushed back to 23 August; we will keep you informed if this happens.)

Voting in local elections occurs by postal vote from 20 September to 12 October 2013. You must be enrolled to receive a voting paper.

Anyone who enrols after 16 August will need to cast a special vote and contact the Council's electoral officer to obtain voting papers.

The Whakatāne District Council advises that emergency work will be carried out on the water pressure release valves at the foot of Ōhope Hill tomorrow, Friday 14 June.

The work will commence at 10am and will take approximately five hours. The water supply to Cliff Road and Browns Road residents will be shut down for the duration of the repairs.

Ōhope residents are urged to use water sparingly during this time, as reservoir storage will be affected. The Council apologises for any inconvenience these emergency repairs may cause and thanks Ōhope residents for their cooperation.

The possible establishment of flight training operations at Whakatāne Airport came a step closer on Wednesday when the Whakatāne District Council adopted a recommendation supporting the development of a ‘Heads of Agreement’ with CTC Aviation Training NZ Limited.

Whakatāne District Council has approved the Proposed Whakatāne District Plan at its Extraordinary Council meeting on 30 May 2013. The reviewed District Plan, which sets out the way land can be used, subdivided and developed in the District, will be available to the community for submissions from 28 June 2013.

The autumn splendour of our deciduous trees adds greatly to the visual appeal of the Whakatāne District’s urban areas. There is a downside though, in the form of the drifts of leaves which, if left unattended, can clog our stormwater systems and increase the risk of localised flooding.

To help avoid potential flooding issues, urban residents throughout the district are urged to take action if they see the gutters and stormwater grates in their neighbourhoods are full of leaves.

Whakatāne District residents will have an opportunity to express their views on the fluoridation of water supplies in a non-binding referendum to be held in conjunction with this year’s local government elections in October.

The details of the referendum were finalised at yesterday’s Monitoring and Policy Committee meeting, with councillors confirming the question to be asked in the referendum, and agreeing on what supporting information should be made available to inform referendum participants.
