Completed works on College Road

Active Whakatāne (College Road Safer Travel Route)

Our Active Whakatāne Strategy aims to make walking, cycling, and scootering around our district safer and easier through education and purpose-built infrastructure.

As part of this strategy, we’re creating Safer Travel Routes that encourage lower traffic speeds, encourage more walking and cycling and make our neighbourhoods safer for everyone.

College Road - Shared user path extension area

Through this Safer Travel Route, we’re hoping to make it easier and safer for tamariki to get to school and for pedestrians to reach destinations like the Edgecumbe Library, College Road shops, the walk along the stopbank and playgrounds.

Key features of the proposed Safer Travel Route include:

Starting Monday, 22 May 2023, the following will be underway in the College Road neighbourhood:

  • Four new raised courtesy pedestrian crossings, one on Rata Ave and three along College Road for easier access and crossing points
  • New wider footpath from Rata Ave to past Edgecumbe College
  • New kerb and channel along all new footpaths
  • Additional stormwater along the length of the project
  • New parking layout, creating additional parking spaces from the Pre-school to Edgecumbe College
  • New entrance ways to all schools

Weather dependant, the works will take place in three stages between Monday, 22 May and Friday, 29 September 2023.

Stage 1

15th May – 30th June
Construction will start at Rata Ave and will go up to the last entrance of Edgecumbe Primary School. This work will include removal of all existing kerbing and footpaths within this section and their reconstruction. All vehicle crossings affected by any changes will also be reconstructed accordingly.

Stage 2

3rd July – 29th September
Construction will start from the end of Stage 1 and will end past the last entrance way to Edgecumbe College. This work will include removal of all existing kerbing and footpaths within this section and their reconstruction. All vehicle crossings affected by any changes will also be reconstructed accordingly.

Stage 3

This stage will include the construction of all entrance and exit ways into all schools as well as all raised pedestrian crossings within College Road. This work is scheduled to take place during the upcoming school holiday.

During construction, College Road will be under traffic management through all stages, with some possible closures to allow safe working conditions for contractors as well as affected residents. Access for residents will be maintained at all times and a school drop off and collection point will be allocated on the school side of College Road and clearly signposted. Residents are asked to put their bins out as usual, and contractors will ensure they are emptied. Mail and courier deliveries will not be affected.
