We undertook an energy audit in 2018 in collaboration with the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) and with the support of Council's energy management contractor EMSOL.

Since September 2019, an energy management programme has been underway to identify, implement, and monitor opportunities for energy savings and emission reductions.

Council continues to monitor specific sites and facilities of interest which contribute the majority of the Council's energy use.

The Council's 14 biggest energy users are:

• Whakatāne War Memorial Hall
• Whakatāne Water Treatment Plant
• Whakatāne Aquatic and Fitness Centre
• Murupara Aquatic Centre
• Te Kōputu a te Whanaga o Toi (Whakatāne Library and Exhibition Centre)
• Te Whare Taonga ō Taketake (Whakatāne Museum and Research Centre)
• Pumps stations:

  • Bridger Glade
  • McAlister Street and Whakatāne Rose Garden

Monthly energy performance reports

Monthly monitoring and reporting of the energy performance of these sites has allowed the Council to monitor the success of any implemented changes and quickly identify any issues.
